🏁 TRACK OF THE WEEK: Butler County Speedway / Thunder Lake 🏁![]()
My families track! It’s been closed for a decade and is back to being a cornfield. But in the ‘90’s my great-grandfather had land that my grandpa and his brother built a very bad ass high banked 1/3 mile dirt track on. ![]()
As a driver : hammer down and hold on. Lots of bank to catch you and some sticky clay that was often just starting to get dryslick at the end of the last A Feature. ![]()
As a fan : think “Field of Dreams”. You had to take at least 3 miles of gravel to get there; most directions required 6+ miles of gravel travel. Surrounded by rolling hills on top of a bluff with a big pond off the back of turns 1 and 2. The engines would echo off the lake and make a sound very similar to thunder (hence the name). ![]()

Before it was known as Butler County Speedway, many Nebraska racers knew it simply as Thunder Lake Speedway.
Tucked away in the countryside outside Rising City, this 1/3-mile dirt oval became one of those places that felt like grassroots racing at its finest. Surrounded by farm ground and Nebraska skies, the track delivered exactly what dirt racing fans came to see—high-banked clay, side-by-side battles, and plenty of nights that ended with stories still being told decades later.
Opening in the mid-1990s, the speedway quickly became a regular stop for some of the region's toughest racers. Sprint Cars, Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Stock Cars, Sport Compacts, Mod Lites, Dwarf Cars, and more all found a home on the Butler County clay.
What made Butler County Speedway special wasn't just the racing—it was the atmosphere. It was the kind of track where families loaded up lawn chairs, racers worked on cars until the last minute in the pits, and everybody seemed to know everybody. It represented the heart of Nebraska dirt track racing: local, hardworking, competitive, and community-driven.
Though the final checkered flag has already fallen, the memories haven't faded. Hundreds of drivers, crew members, sponsors, and fans still carry stories from nights spent under the lights in Rising City. For many racers, Butler County Speedway wasn't just another track on the schedule—it was part of their racing journey.
From all of us at Demon Decals, here's a salute to a racetrack that helped shape Nebraska dirt track racing and created memories that continue to live on long after the engines went quiet.

🏁 TRACK OF THE WEEK: US 30 SPEEDWAY 🏁
Our home track. Where the majority of us at Demon decals cut our teeth as drivers and have been attending races at since we were kids. First off, huge shoutout to the Lincoln Family for decades of hard work and commitment. The new ownership is proving to be all positives across the board, congrats to Dale Johnson on the new endeavor!
As a driver : elbows up, get into the corners deep, and DIG back out. Technical and requires a lot of throttle discipline. The tires at the bottom will eat you up, but the moisture down there on the sandy track is key some nights. Ripping the lip here requires a big ol’ set of balls. The wall comes fast and no cushion to rely on. Expect 4-5 wide racing.
As a fan : get there early or it might be standing room only; factory town, so Thursday night is most guys Friday night. If the hometown hero wins, you might need to plug your ears because the crowd cheers louder than the cars on the track. ![]()

When people talk about Nebraska dirt track racing, it's impossible not to mention the legendary US 30 Speedway.
Built in 1985 on open farmland just west of Columbus, this 1/3-mile clay oval has spent more than four decades becoming one of the most recognizable weekly racing destinations in the Midwest. What started as a local dirt track quickly grew into a Thursday night tradition that racers and fans have planned their summers around for generations.
For countless drivers, US 30 has been the place where careers started, rivalries were born, championships were won, and lifelong friendships were made. From weekly IMCA competition to special events that pack the grandstands, the track has earned a reputation for competitive racing and a passionate fan base that shows up year after year.
The Lincoln family built the speedway in 1985 and dedicated decades of their lives to keeping dirt track racing alive in Columbus. Their commitment helped create a racing culture that has impacted thousands of drivers, crews, sponsors, and fans across Nebraska and beyond.
Today, US 30 Speedway stands as more than just a racetrack. It's a gathering place. A summer tradition. A piece of Nebraska racing history.
From all of us at Demon Decals, thank you to everyone who has turned laps, worked pit gates, sold tickets, waved flags, sponsored race cars, packed the grandstands, and kept the lights on over the years.
Here's to the next generation of Thursday Night Thunder.
